Maine Entomological Society Mazurkiewicz Scholarship Fund

The Maine Entomological Society (M.E.S.) offers scholarships each year for educational and research expenses in the study of Maine insects.

If you would like to support this effort and contribute to the fund, please use the donate button.

Please read the information below, and then fill out the form on this page to apply.

Maine educators (teachers, Master Naturalists, amateur and profession entomologists) and students at all levels are eligible. Membership in M.E.S. is not required. All scholarship recipients will be given a one-year M.E.S. membership. Eligible projects include any significant educational or research expenses such as fees for courses, books, supplies for research or class projects, and registration and housing fees for course work or meetings. Projects M.E.S. has funded in the past include:

  • Help with expenses of attending entomology workshops at Eagle Hill

  • Supplies for an undergraduate student project to tag Monarch butterflies

  • Expenses for participation in a Maine insect bio-blitz

  • Expenses for an M.E.S. Member to conduct research during an unpaid internship

  • Registration for students at a UMO seminar on invasive species

Generally, M.E.S. grants are $500 or less. Requests for larger amounts are considered on a case-by-case basis. Grant funds are issued by check to the organization sponsoring the educational opportunity or the company providing books or research supplies. In the case of grants for travel, checks are issued to the scholarship recipient.

The educational impact of M.E.S. grants is our top priority. Scholarship recipients are required to report on how they have used the funds and how they have contributed to education on Maine insects. Scholarship recipients will be asked to write a short article on their grant for the quarterly M.E.S. Newsletter, and when applicable, will be offered the opportunity to present an M.E.S. Webinar.
